Ernest Rutherford is considered the father of nuclear physics.  He studied radiations emitted from Uranium and Thorium and named them alpha and beta.  Using alpha particles as atomic bullets, he probed the atoms in a piece of gold foil.  This experiment established that the nuleus was dense, small, and positively charged.  He also assumed electrons were located outside the nucleus.
