J.J. Thomson discovered the electron through a study of cathode ray.  He stated electrons had a mass about 1000 times smaller than a hydrogen atom.  His plum pudding atomic model consisted of electrons suspended in a positively charged electric field and that atoms were mostly "empty" space.  He also determined charge to mass ration as being:
e/m=1.759 x 10^8 coloumbs/g in an electron.
